For Ages 15–16
Paddle-N-More’s Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program is designed for teens who want to build leadership skills, support younger campers, and gain early experience in outdoor recreation and youth programming. CITs work alongside staff, practice communication and group management, and learn what it takes to be a positive leader in a fast-paced waterfront environment.
Program Overview
CITs learn to:
- Support camper groups on land and on the water
- Assist with equipment setup and activity preparation
- Communicate clearly and respectfully
- Demonstrate responsibility, initiative, and teamwork
- Understand basic safety expectations and group management
- Practice leadership techniques during daily camp activities
CITs are trainees—not campers—and participate in guided, hands-on leadership development.
Leadership Training
CIT training focuses on:
- Youth development & communication
- Group management and behavior support
- Risk awareness, judgment, and proactive decision-making
- Waterfront etiquette and responsibilities
- Conflict resolution and professionalism
These skills prepare teens for future roles such as Junior Instructor (age 16+) or Activity Leader (age 18+).
On-Water Support
While CITs do not independently teach watersports, they help instructors with:
- Group launches and transitions
- Encouraging younger campers
- Practicing safety communication and situational awareness
CITs must be comfortable in deeper water while wearing a USCG-approved lifejacket.
